About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a regulated profession, providing safe and effective treatment of many painful complaints. The focus is on the framework of the body consisting of the bones, ligaments, muscles and connective tissues or fascia. Osteopaths assess the condition of this musculo-skeletal system looking for areas of weakness, imbalance and excessive strain. Any potential ‘weak points’ will determine how the body functions and influences  the general health of your whole body.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy provides a system of diagnosis and treatment based upon the concept that the structure of your body governs your ability to function. Osteopathy works to encourage the bodies self healing mechanism. There are many factors that influence the way in which our bodies work such as occupation, driving, caring for your family, sports or social activities.

Osteopaths primarily treat the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, ligaments) to resolve mechanical dysfunctions. We use a highly developed sense of touch called palpation in examination and treatment. This combined with our comprehensive anatomy training allows us to assess you in a truly unique way.

Osteopathic treatment may include soft tissue massage, articulation (gentle movement to improve joint mobility), stretching, manipulation and Cranial Osteopathy. We assess each patient individually, so your treatment plan will get you feeling better as soon as possible.

Why Choose Osteopathy?

As well as diagnosing the cause of your pain, Osteopaths look at why your symptoms have occurred. This may involve addressing other areas of your body that could have influenced your current pain or perhaps make you more vulnerable to injury in the future.
Benefits of treatment can include pain relief, increased mobility, reduced stiffness and improved function reducing the need for surgery. Many people can benefit from Osteopathy whether you are old or young, sporty or less active. The effects of daily chores, work and a busy family life can all influence your body’s ability to cope with strains and tension, contributing to aches and pains. We give advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery and promote health. Additionally Osteopaths provide treatment to prevent systems recurring, important in improving your future well being.
What Qualifications should an Osteopath have?Osteopaths undertake a minimum of 4 years full time training. This includes study of anatomy, physiology, pathology & biomechanics and       includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council GOsC (the regulatory body of osteopaths in the United Kingdom). Regulating the profession ensures ongoing commitment to providing you with exceptional standards of care and safe Osteopathic treatment. By law, Osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) www.osteopathy.org.uk. It is an offence for anyone to call themselves an Osteopath if they are not registered.
